VICTORIAN RUGBY LEAGUE ACADEMY

Empowering Junior Victorians to Reach Their full Potential in Rugby League

Our Values

Effort

We believe in doing everything with 100% effort. It’s the one thing you can always control. We teach our players that while you can’t control everything, you can always control how hard you work.

Discipline

The difference between where you are and where you want to be in the future is the discipline you put in every day. At VRLA, we believe that success isn’t just about talent; it’s about the consistent commitment.

Integrity

Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. At the VRLA, we believe in honesty and respect, both on and off the field. It’s about making the right choices even when it’s tough. It’s not just about being a great player, but a great person.

Meet our founder

Young Tonumaipe’a

I was raised in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, where I attended Bethal, Meadow Heights, and Roxburgh Homestead Primary Schools. I later graduated from Roxburgh Secondary College.

My childhood consisted of playing soccer and Aussie Rules and it wasn’t until the age of 15 years old that my schoolmates introduced me to rugby league for the first time. This ignited my love for the game.

My rugby league journey was kicked off when I joined my junior club, Northern Thunder. Through here I made the VIC Rugby League State team and later progressed to the Under-18 SG Ball squad. From there, I was signed by the Melbourne Storm Under-20s team, and then gradually earnt myself an NRL contract in 2013.

In 2014, after years of hard work, discipline, and resilience, I played my first NRL game for Melbourne Storm against Manly, this was the beginning of my career.

Over the next decade, I was fortunate to play for the Melbourne Storm, Gold Coast Titans and the Melbourne Rebels in Super Rugby. My greatest achievement in my career was playing for the Toa Samoa and representing my country Samoa.

Now, after over a decade of experience alongside world-class teammates, incredible coaches, and unforgettable challenges, I’m passionate about giving back to the game that has given me so much.

My mission is simple: “Empowering Junior Victorians to Reach Their full Potential in Rugby League”

I am committed to providing coaching and support to everyone, no matter the cultural background, religion or gender, to help them excel in rugby league.

With my experience from grassroots to NRL, I want to inspire and guide junior Victorians to achieve their best.
